What is 2-1-1?

2-1-1 is a national, easy to remember, easy to use three digit phone number that will enable people in need to receive 24/7/365 information and referrals to health and human services, crisis/suicide intervention, community resources and disaster related services. 2-1-1 currently serves 196 million Americans, 57% of the US population. As of August 2006 there are 192 active 2-1-1 call systems in 41 states. There are presently 16 2-1-1 call centers serving Florida. 2-1-1 First Call For Help (2-1-1 Broward) is the local provider of 2-1-1. Simply dialing 2-1-1, or 954-537-0211, connects callers with specially trained information and referral (I&R) counselors who can help the callers begin finding solutions to their problems. The idea is simple— one number to call: 2-1-1. Calls are toll-free, confidential and anonymous from anywhere in Broward County.

Upon contacting the Helplines, callers experiencing personal crises or emotional problems or those in need of information about local health or human service resources will speak with trained Helpline Counselors who listen and respond to the caller's feelings and concerns. We explore options and problem-solving alternatives and then refer the caller to the agency/program in the community that will best meet the identified need(s).
