2012 BankAtlantic Non-Profit Academy Award
Nominations Criteria and Cover Page


Now more than ever in these challenging times, local nonprofit organizations need to be recognized by the community they serve for their tireless efforts. They are essential to the vitality of our community. On Friday, February 24, 2012,the2nd Annual BankAtlantic Non-Profit Academy Awards presented by 2-1-1 Broward and hosted by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casinowill recognize the collective efforts of Broward non-profits and the individual accomplishments of non-profit leaders at an awards ceremony and luncheon.

2-1-1 Broward is now accepting nominations for outstanding individual and organizational efforts in seven categories: Innovation, Advocacy, Rising Star, Staff Leadership, Board Leadership, Organization of the Year and Lifetime Achievement. The awards competition is free of charge, and applications from both young and established 501(c)3 organizations are encouraged.

Up to three finalists will be selected in each category by a panel of impartial judges. Winners of the awards will be revealed at the event. Winning individuals and organizations will receive a $1,000 grant to theirorganization. Two nominee organizations in each category will receive $500. In addition, they will receive publicity and awareness of the work of their organization through eventpress and media materials and online and social media coverag
e.

Online nominations are encouraged; however, printed nomination forms are available upon request for those that are unable to complete an online nomination. Nominations are due by 5pm on November 30, 2011. Finalists will be announced on January 24, 2012. Winners will be announced at the event on February 24, 2012.


All nominees must meet the following criteria: • Individuals/organizations must be based in Broward County. (National non-profits based in Broward County are eligible if activities are focused in Broward County.) 

• Individuals/organizations may self nominate or be nominated by others. 

• Organizations may be nominated in more than one award category but must submit a separate nomination for each category. 

• Every nomination must include the cover page and the appropriate award application. 

• Applications can be no more than 4 pages, including cover page. 

• A copy of the organization’s 501(c)3 must be included with applications. 

• Copy of the latest audited financials or 990 form must be included with applications




Outstanding Non-Profit Leader of the Year 

The recipient of this award must be in a staff leadership position (Executive Director, President, CEO) with his/her current organization and have a proven track record of accomplishment. The recipient will be chosen based on the following criteria: 

• Demonstrates visionary leadership within his/her organization

• Displays ethical integrity

• Exhibits leadership and facilitates collaboration in the broader community 

• Demonstrates creativity, innovation, and/or entrepreneurship to successfully address core organizational or community issues

Outstanding Non-Profit Board Leader of the Year 

This award will be presented to a non-profit board member who has enhanced the mission and reputation of the agency they currently serve. Nominees must have exhibited: 

• Strong commitment to the organization 

• Effective leadership 

• Engagement in fundraising efforts 

• Policy oversight and/or strategic direction 

• Consensus building skills

Patriot National Insurance Group
Non-Profit Organization of the Year – Innovation
 

This award is intended to honor true innovation in the work of a nonprofit. It recognizes creative and non-traditional approaches to solving community challenges. Within the past 12 months, nominated nonprofits should have: 

• Applied innovative solutions to community challenges 

• Employed a variety of strategies in developing these solutions 

• Developed innovative/entrepreneurial approaches to creating new or increasing revenue streams 

• Collaborated with other community stakeholders including nonprofit organizations, businesses and/or governmental agencies in their efforts

Wasie Foundation
Non-Profit Organization of the Year – Advocacy 

This award recognizes advocacy as one of the most effective and unique roles of nonprofit organizations. Types of advocacy work honored in this category could include legislative action, civic engagement, grassroots advocacy, etc. Within the past 12 months, nominated organizations will have: 

 Implemented an effective advocacy strategy 

• Engaged constituents/volunteers in advocacy activities 

• Demonstrated success in its advocacy efforts 

• Impacted the organization's constituency

Non-Profit Organization of the Year – Rising Star 

A “Rising Star” organization is young and small, but their potential for growth and impact is high. Organization must be in existence for 5 years or less and have a budget under $750,000. Nominees must show: 

• Clearly defined mission and vision for its future 

• Financial stability/diversity of resources 

• Demonstrates cohesive board/staff partnership and leadership 

• Positioned for future growth and impact 

• Demonstrated impact on their constituency despite limited resources

Berger Singerman
Outstanding Non-Profit Organization of the Year
 

This award is designed to identify organizations that exhibit excellent management practices, demonstrate positive results and serve as a model for other non-profit organizations. Applications will focus on the following key areas of non-profit excellence: 

• Exceptional overall results and impact 

• Strong governance and executive leadership 

• Excellent financial stability • Inclusive organizational practices 

• Effective communication • Ethical fundraising practices

Lifetime Achievement Award

This award will honor an individual that has made exceptional contributions of at least 20 years to the non-profit field. Recipient will be chosen based on the following criteria: 

• How they have furthered the work of their organization(s).

• The impact of their dedication on those they serve. 

• A reputation for professionalism and integrity in the community.
